TG(IF) 1000th issue extravaganza!

That’s right friends, this is the 1000th Substack posted by yours truly. What started out as an easy way for me to send forth your compulsory testing notices (remember those?!?!?), then morphed into a nightly news wrap of Hong Kong news, started back in January 2022. More on that later in the TG(IF), but first, as always, all of Friday’s news that matters 👇

1. Activist Joshua Wong has been arrested (while incarcerated) for suspected “conspiracy to collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security”, contravening Article 29(2) and (4) of the National Security Law, and for suspected "dealing with property known or believed to represent proceeds of indictable offence", contravening Section 25 of the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 455).

I like how the press release said he was arrested in Stanley, like they nabbed him having a swim at the beach or something, and not, you know, in Stanley Prison…

2. All week various local media outlets have been predicting a typhoon in the coming days, but I could find nothing to prove it.

Don’t put that T8 party into your calendar just yet is all I’m saying.

ECMWF and ICON have nothing, and while GFS does have a large storm predicted for the 13th, it's east of Taiwan.

3. Octopus Cards has teamed up with a yet-to-launch taxi fleet to allow booking and payments via the Octopus app.

The beta version of the Easy Ride app is already baked into the Octopus App, but it’s a hot mess. Simplified Chinese street names, then a weird mixture of Traditional and English when you click on a destination. I guess they have 6 weeks or so to iron out the problems, but why send it live now?

Ok, back to the 1000th issue celebrations. Back on January 22nd 2022, out went the first CTN list. 4 people read it.

fun times. Not.

By October of 2022, the testing hadn’t stopped, but the writing was on the wall, so in addition to CTN notices, the first newsletter appeared. 618 people read it.

On January 1st 2024, the newsletter finally got a name. The Tripperhead Gazette. 1,611 people read it.

So what was the most read Tripperhead Substack over the past 999 issues? This one of course.

Tripperhead Useless Trivia Time!: It’s been 1,234 days (I love that number) since the first Substack was published. 1,000 newsletters in 1,234 days is quite a lot! 81% of days in that time a version of the TG was issued. Here’s to the next 1,000, and thanks to everyone who has contributed and read the TG over the past 3+ years 🙏.
