Taxi industry wants licence buyout program.
And a Hker wins big at the “Olympics” of the piano world.
1. It’s “The John Lee Show” Tuesday, and today the CE announced his policy address for 2025 will come in September due to December’s LegCo elections.
2. Also at Tuesday’s press conference, the CE talked on recent calls for the government to buy out taxi licences in the on-going feud between the industry and ride-hailing apps.
Lee was very polite in saying no, stating “that any use of public funds must be cautious”. He also said online ride-hailing is an irreversible trend.
Meanwhile Uber is trying to butter the government up before a decision on ride-hailing apps is (hopefully!) announced next month, offering to create a fund for the taxi industry via a surcharge if the app gets legal status.
3. For those who have registered for the contactless e-channel service between Hong Kong and Macao (and are PR), you can now register for iris scan as well, taking out the need for the fingerprint scan I guess?
The scanners are in place at Outer Harbour, Taipa Ferry, Macau International Airport, and the big ol’ bridge checkpoint.
