Just Super Typhoon Yagi news tonight.
1. With Super Typhoon skirting below Hong Kong, the Education Bureau has cancelled all classes on Friday.
2. HKO raised the T8 flag at 6.20pm on Thursday; schools are closed on Friday, but will work be binned all day? We shall see…
3. Airlines start cancelling flights for Friday.
4. Ferries similarly cancelled.
5. Even Mark 6 can’t escape the Yagi…
6. And to end, could this end up being HKO’s worst ever T8 call? As it stands on Thursday evening, this storm is a loooong way from Hong Kong.
Yes it’s a Super Typhoon, and yes it’s very dangerous. But HKO has effectively shut down the city on Friday for a typhoon 300kms away.
Let’s talk about Waglan Island for a bit. Every time a typhoon passes to the south of Hong Kong, Waglan is rolled out as a reason to go T8.
This is Waglan Island. Population 0. And if a typhoon is to the south of us, its readings dictate our typhoon response.
It’s a horrible Catch-22 where I hope I’m right, therefore they are wrong, but if they’re right then I am wrong and HK suffers damage. But I’m not convinced a T8 is required for a typhoon so far away. I do think a strong wind warning would suffice, but I’m no meteorologist.

Do you know if motor vehicle insurance ceases to be effective as soon as Typhoon Signal 8 is hoisted? Taxis charge “seafood prices” as we are told they have no insurance. What about buses, trams, other commercial vehicles and private cars? Then there are emergency vehicles. If damaged by the typhoon while on the road and responding to an emergency, surely, insurance covers it. I’m just curious with too much time on my hands on a not so windy or rainy night. 🤔🤔🤔😅
