Another Black Rainstorm day. Uggh.
Latest population stats.
Massive profit drop for CK Hutchison.
And cruise ship mall to become live music hub.
All this and the rest of Thursday’s news that matters 👇
NEWS AND WEATHER
(BECAUSE IT’S THE SAME THING TODAY)
• Typhoon Podul made landfall 400kms north east of the city on Thursday morning, then proceeded to fall apart, dumping all the rain bands on Hong Kong.
Like a broken record about broken records, here I go.
By the end of the day we had our 27th rainstorm warning of the month issued, five more than any other month on record. And it’s only the 14th!
There were also some interesting signals issued by HKO on Thursday. The rare “severe rainstorm” warning indicating that one particular district had received more than 100mm of rain in an hour, and the even rarer “Exceptionally severe rainstorm” warning indicating 140+mm/hr.
Righto, I know you’re not here for my nerd stats, you just want to look at flood pictures. There is more boring trivia at the end of the TG.
Fine, here are two photos from that ESR in Sai Ying Pun.

• Today’s deluge affected the closing statements at Jimmy Lai's trial, now moved to Friday…
…and flights…
…and of course schools, with many schools only returning for the first day of the school year on Wednesday. Unfortunately for some parents, the Red Rainstorm Warning came a little too late for those already on school buses.
• Li Ka-shing too busy worrying about massive profit loss to save Hong Kong from all the rain with his field.
