Preliminary report into HKIA cargo crash.
Alibaba grabs a chunk of real estate in Causeway Bay.
Labubu to get the Barbie treatment.
And lots of sports news…
All this and the rest of the news I’ve missed that matters 👇
• Back on October 20th a 747 cargo jet veered off the runway at HKIA killing two airport workers. The first preliminary report into the crash is in, and all eyes are on Engine #4.
You can read the report here.
• AS Watson’s Europe boss Ed van de Weerd became an hero in Hong Kong on Wednesday after jumping into the water to save a drowning woman.
Why was Ed in town at just the right time to save this woman? Probably because of this.
• The Grade A office space market continues to improve, helped by Alibaba dropping almost US$1 billion to snap up 13 floors at the new One Causeway Bay building.
• Just as the latest Labubu craze dies down, Sony Pictures wants to bring it all back again.
A reminder of why Labubu news is Hong Kong news: apart from Pop Mart being listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, Labubu was created by a Hong Kong artist, Kasing Lung.
There’s always a Hong Kong angle!
SPORT
• The 15th National Games has wrapped, but not before Hong Kong nabbed another gold, this time in the men’s foil team event.
• No joy for the Hong Kong men’s football team, losing to Singapore at Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday evening, meaning Singapore will advance and Hong Kong will not.
Were the Singaporeans gracious in victory? Absolutely not.
Acting Singapore Sports Minister David Neo, speaking to the Singapore players post-game: “It was fantastic … you kena [Malay for hit] pressured by them, all the fans were bloody idiots, end up players also played like idiots [sic] … But you all played like lions.”
• And finally, not content with a bag of Nat Games medals, Siobhan Haughey hit Victoria Harbour on Saturday in the cross-harbour swimming event and clinched silver at her very first attempt.
Also congrats to winners Keith Sin and Nip Tsz-yin.
The next rest day for the 2025 ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy is on Monday, so good news, there’ll be a Monday TG! If you’re having a lazy Sunday reading this, you can tune into the tournament and enjoy my dulcet tones for the Uganda vs PNG and UAE vs Scotland matches at https://www.icc-cricket.com/icc-tv from 8.45am HKT.

Why was the woman swimming in Victoria Harbour to begin with? Practicing for the cross harbour race??
