Sunday August 9th, 2026 was the hottest day ever recorded at the Hong Kong Observatory in TST, beating the previous record of 36.6°C in 2017.

HKO broke its own record less than an hour later, reaching 36.9°C at 2.17pm.
0.3°C warmer than the old record.

August 9th, 2026 is officially the hottest day ever recorded at Hong Kong Observatory since records began in 1884, with the mercury rising to 36.8°C at 1.20pm.
The previous record at HKO was 36.6°C on August 22nd, 2017.

Then at 3.21pm, an all-time high of 39.8°C was recorded in Sheung Shui.

Records tumbled across the SAR.
And FWIW, Sheung Shui went above 39 again on Monday.
It’s the only AWS (Automatic Weather Station) to ever record a temperature above 39.0°C, and it did it in consecutive days.
• While Hong Kong sweltered, the much vaunted Heat Stress at Work Warning launched by the Labour Department (meant as a way to protect outdoor workers from heatstroke) never went above Amber.
Since its launch in May 2023, it has never gone above Amber.

Even with the temperature almost hitting 40°C in Sheung Shui, the Red Heat Stress at Work Warning was not issued.
It would be interesting to know what kind of end-of-life-on-Earth disaster it would take to issue a Black Heat Stress at Work Warning.

Sunday was the 200th time an Amber Heat Stress at Work Warning was issued.
Seems I wasn’t the only one questioning this decision…

Yes, I understand the humidity was lower yesterday which compromised the calculations, but I dare anyone to work outdoors in 40°C heat in blazing sunshine. Especially the paper pushers at the Labour Department who came up with this system…
