TAI PO FIRE
OFFICIAL DEATH TOLL: 156
• With the death toll standing at 156, 29 bodies awaiting identification, and 30 still unaccounted for, the city’s relief efforts for those affected in the Tai Po fire have ramped up.
As with any tragedy, there are stories of heroics. Reuters posted a story about one domestic helper who went viral shielding her employer’s child during the fire.
Alcaraz is still in hospital but has become a symbol for Filipino FDHs in Hong Kong, with Philippines senator Imee Marcos visiting her at United Christian Hospital.
• On Tuesday Chief Executive fronted the media to announce an independent review will be commissioned into the fire.
Options for the independent inquiry do include creating one under Commissions of Inquiry Ordinance (Cap. 86). Such a commission has sweeping legal powers, but it’s not clear whether this commission/review will be gazetted, though it currently seems it will not. If not, then the review will only report to the CE. Will update when more details are announced.

The good news is many more were rescued.
